About Picton United Church Food Bank

Sharing food since 1984

The Picton United Church Food Bank has a long history of sharing. In 1984, the food bank was born, to provide food for those in need. Each week 20+ volunteers, led by Seona Halsey a 30-year veteran of the food bank, come together to purchase food, collect partner food donations, unload it, stock the shelves, greet our clients with a smile and share food.

This year the team transitioned from a "we serve model" where prepacked boxes were handed to clients, to a "shopping model" where clients walk the aisles like we all do at the grocery store and get to choose what they take and what they leave for others. This model is one of dignity and has been well received by our clients. This model is also one of people helping people and often clients that are able will help bring the groceries of others up the stairs reinforcing we are all in this together.

 A generous community

Let's not forget our great community members, who make everything possible. In 2024, we were supported by over 25 business donors, 30 community & religious organizations and 185 individuals. In turn, we purchase most, in not all, food bank items from local retailers, because a strong, prosperous community is our shared goal.
